let’s start by taking a look at how I use Linkedin. First off I have two Linkedin accounts, purely by accident,  I set one up years ago and forgot about it and then started a new one and Linkedin does not allow you to merge the two. I have 685 contacts on my primary Linkedin account and 201 on my old account so a total of 886 contacts and growing everyday.  I participate in multiple activities on Linked in including the following:

  • Professional Profile
  • Recommendations
  • Groups
  • Status Updates
  • Answers
  • Collaboration Applications

Strategies For Building your linkedin Community :

  1. Build the Linkedin Invite Habbit –I have started to send an email invitation to connect on Linkedin to all of my new business contacts that I make each week. This keeps a steady growth in the number of contacts that I have in my Linkedin Network.
  2. Optimize Your Linkedin Profile – Many of us, myself included, have boring Linkedin Profiles. My objective is to spice it up a bit with better descriptions, more engaging content and links.
  3. Optimize Your Linkedin Updates – Use the update tool to let people know what you are working on and engage them into a conversation or drive them to your blog or website. Don’t waste there time by telling them you are heading to Startbucks or having lunch!
  4. Join Linkedin Groups– I join appropriate Linkedin Groups where I participate and share best practices. I have listed the groups below. Some of these groups have over 5000 members.  So I encourage you to join and be active in one or many of these groups.
  5. Start a Linkedin Group – You have the ability to start a group or sub-group and invite your contacts and others to join.  No matter what your area of expertise your can set up a group and begin forming a community.  In the spirit of practicing what I preach, I just started a Linkedin Group called Think Conversation! as part of expanding the conversation about Social. Please join my Linkedin group and join the conversation with the Linkedin community as well.
  6. Linked In Answers– Participate in the Linkedin Answers section. You can anwer questions or post your own questions and discussions. this is a great way to expand your personal exposure and also can be used to drive people to your sites/blogs for more details.
  7. Linkedin Applications – There are a number of collaboration tools that empower you to engage more deeply with your Linkedin Community for presenting, hosting virtual meetings etc.

My personal experience with Linkedin has been very favorable.  Overall I’d say at this point in my journey Linkedin is my number one “Business Social Network” choice.

Please share your experience with us and join the conversation..
